Director Manifesto-
Hello everyone, as you all know my name is Leanne and I have decided to run for the role of Director in the Committee Elections 2022-2023 for the Musical Theatre Society. I believe this role will showcase all the skills I currently have from my many years of experience within this area from BTEC Performing Arts, A-level Drama and Theatre studies and my current course that I am studying which is an Honours Degree in Theatre Arts. However, I am still learning new skills from this course some of which are specifically aimed at directing and I believe this will positively impact on any decisions made if I was to become director. I have always enjoyed performing from a young age specifically when I was cast as one of the lead roles for my end of school play which was Bugsy Malone, this is where my love and passion for performing really started to show and I have perused it ever since.
I have put on many performances all of which required some self-direction and peer direction. I have always enjoyed putting forward my ideas and exploring new ways to tell a story on stage and creating a world for people to enjoy whether that is through script work or devised pieces. Equally, I am very open minded and understanding which is why I love hearing ideas from others even if they go against my own, I will always make sure everyone feels included and will try to incorporate their ideas by exploring each one, even if they do not work as I believe everyone should have the opportunity to share their ideas as this is a society at the end of the day and is something everyone should enjoy partaking in. Personally, for me, I have always been interested in taking on the role of a director as it is a challenge I have always wanted to peruse within my course and is something I would like to explore once I have finished with my degree, so if I was elected this role for musical theatre, it will help me gain some of the experience needed.
Some of the skills that I have picked up over the years are organisation skills which I have learnt are extremely important when working in Theatre especially if I was elected the Director role. Being able to organise will enable me to write weekly plans for rehearsal, update everyone on any changes that are made, liaise with the rest of the creative team, do weekly research to ensure sessions are planned accordingly etc…. I have also acquired people skills which will enable me to speak to large groups when I am teaching or even do a one-to-one session for anyone that requires help. This skill will also enable me to deal with any conflict as I believe I am a reasonable person and I trust my own judgement so I will always do what is best for the society. I have also gained leadership skills which is one of the main requirements for this role and will help me make any quick and final decisions if needed.
If elected I will:
- Ensure the creative team are appointed as soon as possible, making sure the society is running smoothly as possible as we will be putting on many shows throughout the year which may be stressful for some, so I would like to make sure that is not the case by having many other committee members to help from the beginning.
- I will communicate with the creative team to ensure that we are collaborating, working on weekly plans for rehearsals and planning for any last-minute changes to the schedule if someone becomes ill or cannot make a session.
- I will always ensure that everyone in the society is happy and will attempt to fix any issues there may be, by frequently asking if anyone needs support with anything and putting aside spare time for anyone.
- I will plan each rehearsal carefully with the help of the creative team asking for feedback from everyone to make sure everyone is enjoying the sessions. I will also plan meetings with the creative team to ensure everything is running smoothly and no time is being wasted when we could be getting important things done.
- I will make sure warm-ups are fun and effective for the session by introducing new games that have not been explored yet. I will try and plan for a new warm up game each week and ask the rest of the cohort for any game requests as this will ensure they are having fun and feel included, as this will be a time for everyone to bond and relax before we get started on the main session.
Finally, I would like to say thank you for reading my Manifesto, if there are any questions that you can think of then please do not be afraid to message me on Facebook or email – Leannemesser406@gmail.com
