Committee Role: Captain
Introduction
My name is Ryan “Merlin” van Wyk. I am going into Year 3 of my degree next season, and I play forward for the university BUCS team. I am running for the committee position of Captain of the men’s BUCS team.
What I have to offer
- Experience – I have played hockey for 15 years now at competitive levels including club premier, provincial/county and at a national level in both indoor and outdoor hockey. I have prior experience of captaining a team on three occasions. On two of those occasions, we won the league and the other we came third.
- Knowledge of the Game – Over the years of me playing hockey I have played in every position and have knowledge of how every position is played and how it can be improved. I am confident in my ability to identify the mistakes that are being made and how we as a team and on an individual basis can grow and improve our skills.
- Passion for the Game and the Team – The passion that I have for hockey and this team is both unending and unparalleled. I have always and will always put the interests and needs of the team before my own.
What makes me the ideal candidate for this position
- I have the necessary skills and experience – As stated before in what I have to offer you, I have the skills, knowledge and experience needed in leadership and hockey in general to make me the ideal candidate. Even though I may not be the best player skilfully on the team, I feel I am the best player to lead the team to success next season.
- I have a good working relationship with our coach – I have played under our coach, Rich, for both the university and Derby Hockey Club. He and I agree on what went wrong this season and what we can do to improve for next season. I understand what he is trying to accomplish in training sessions, and I have seen how successful his training methods are in the Derby Hockey Club performances.
- I have already organised things for this team in the past – As was stated in the first meeting when AA stated he wanted the captain to be in charge of kits, at the beginning of the season, when we did not have a kit available, I took the initiative to organise, with Derby Hockey Club, for the university to use the purple kits. Those kits are still currently being used as our mixed league kits on Sundays.
- I have plans for more hockey for us as a team in the future outside of BUCS.
