Candidate for the position of Badminton - Secretary

Abbie Smith

My name is Abbie Smith, and I would like to run for the role of Club Secretary for the University of Derby Badminton Club.

I am in the process of completing my undergraduate degree in Psychology but have applied to study a MSc in Applied Sport and Exercise Science (Psychology pathway) next year. I have trained and competed in the Badminton Women’s first team since I started University in September 2019 and have been fortunate enough to have been part of some great successes during this time; winning the  BUCS Women’s North Premier Division and reaching the BUCS Championship Cup Final. I have also been the Women’s First Team captain for the last two seasons (2020/21 and 2021/22) and am a running member of the committee, as Social Secretary (Media Officer).

Moving forward, I feel that the club would benefit from expanding its social circle to build relationships with other sports and societies whether that be through social events or smaller activities. I also feel that the club is now more inclusive of all abilities, offering regular sessions to social players and additional sessions for second team players which has undoubtedly been a success. This is another aspect of the club that I believe should continue to be progressed in the future so that the club has depth in teams, greater opportunities for personal player development and team successes. I believe that I would be a good fit for this role as I am super passionate and enthusiastic about ensuring that all club members have the best experience possible whilst at the University. I have vast experience of administrative tasks including organising transport and team sheets and have also worked closely alongside the Union and club President throughout my captaincy. Although I feel that applying for the role of President at the club may be too demanding whilst studying a masters, I would love to have the opportunity to support whoever takes on that role and be able to use my knowledge and experience to help the committee.

Thank you for reading my manifesto – please vote for me!
