My name is Chloe, and I am nominating myself for the role of the Vice-President. As Vice-President, I will use the knowledge and skills gained from being the social and career secretary last year (2021/2022) to create networking and social events for the society, alongside the committee.
I have a very good understanding of what everyone wants from the committee after receiving feedback from the members this year and have some exciting ideas to offer: I will create more networking events and focus these on at the beginning of the year as vacation schemes and training contract applications close around the time of December. This way you can develop your networking skills during events such as various career talks to run with the law school and organise attending external law fairs in person (if available) to allow our members to gain more contacts and further their legal network. I will use my contacts to give us access to online events relevant to law. I would also like to consider the possibility of holding our own smaller networking events with local law firms perhaps working with Derby Junior Lawyers, to help us establish a bridge between the community and the society. Within the law society 2021/2022, I created a mentoring scheme with the President, Nicola; I am planning to continue this scheme to allow the law students to develop a relationship with a peer mentor to help them through the rollercoaster of university.
Regarding social events, I would like to support the role of the social and career secretary with helping set up more monthly events with a bigger range of activities, including events such as wine and cheese night, movie night, mini-golf, cocktail or mocktail making and pub quizzes. I understand that we all have different ideas of what is fun for a social event, so I would make sure this year we do have more alcohol-free events available and have more being held within parent friendly hours. I would like to make sure we have a refreshers event in place next year so we can continue growing our society and allowing us to welcome everyone back from the Christmas break in true law society manner. The law ball is a staple event for the law school, and I would want to make sure it runs as smoothly as it did in previous years. Being in my last year, I would work my hardest to make it the one the remember!
The committee want to make sure we are creating events which you want to attend and to make sure we are doing that, feedback is key. I would make sure that your voice is heard as a member of the society with having more frequent feedback being given through surveying the members.
