HI,
During my time at uni I’ve come to love the climbing society, I’ve been climbing for about 3 years but never really felt like I was part of a community like I do here. So, it would be cool to have the opportunity to give back to it as a secretary. I believe I would be a great fit for the role as I’ve interacted with a lot of the members in the society and feel I understand the general consensus about it. I’m a good listener so I’ll take on any and all feedback and ensure it finds it’s way into plans for the year. I also try to introduce as many people to climbing as possible. I think this would be a fulfilling opportunity for me and develop my confidence and organization skills.
Here are some of my ideas for the direction of the society:
What I would get rid of/reduce –
I noticed that there’s been a trend with the socials involving a lot of drinking, I would have these events be less frequent in favour of non-drinking events. As I know quite a few members who do not drink, its a shame to have them not feel included or have it be another social they can’t join in on.
What needs improving –
The society has had a big increase in membership, however I think It would still be good to recruit more climbers by improving the give it a go sessions, putting them on more frequently, or by pushing them more on our social media.
Also, the bloody sport centre door handle!
What I would add –
To have more varied and interesting events, we could have brainstorming sessions where members can throw out their ideas for activities, which would then be voted for using a form and then organized by the committee. This could be done either in person or through the group chat.
There are many members I’ve talked to that have shown interest in more outdoor events outside of the city, especially now that the weather is good. One of my ideas for this type of event is a day trip to the Roaches in the peak district near where I live which has some great grit outdoor boulders and top-rope routes and is only an hour way.
Thanks for reading.
pls vote for me :)
