Hi! My name is Jonny and I’m a 3rd year Sport and Exercise Science student who will be studying for my Masters in Applied Sport Science next year making it my 5th year at the University. I’m the current President of Table Tennis and have recently been re-elected for my 2nd year in the this will be my 4th year on committee having served 2 years previously as Secretary for the club.

This year I have been a part of the Sports Council in the role of Sports Councillor and feel I have played a major role behind the scenes in the rebuild and success of sports following a couple of rough COVID stricken years! I’ve also played a big role in keeping things student led with the planning of Union events throughout the year including Varsity and in reviewing the criteria for this years Sports Awards.

One of my main manifesto points as Sports Councillor was to continue to push the offer of Mental Health training and I worked alongside this years VP Activities to source and organise the provision of Mental Health First Aid England accredited Mental Health First Aid training to committee members this year, this will always be something I’d look to continue.

I’d like to outline 3 points below that I’d like to work towards if elected by you lovely lot as your Union Sports Chair for the 2022/23 year:

  1. I want to continue the brilliant work done this year by the Sports Council in working alongside the Union staff, VP Activities and club committee’s to push for more support for the smaller teams. Having seen the struggles first hand through my time with Table Tennis I know how much it is appreciated by committee’s and members of the smaller teams to have that connection to the Union through the Council.
  2. One of the most requested things from you guys this year was the need for more training space and resources so I want to work closely with the Union and our new VP Activities to look at the possibility of providing this for all sports clubs.
  3. I will design and create, alongside the newly elected Sports Council, a criteria matrix/form which clubs can submit to the Council with requests for things, big or small, that they think they may need for the upcoming year to improve their clubs offer. For example, a Rounders diamond or Lacrosse pitch lines. This can then be escalated to the Union or the University for approval.

Thank you all for taking time out of your current busy assignment heavy schedule to read my manifesto and I really hope that you relate to my ideas and that I get your vote!

See you all next year regardless!

Jonny
