Running for Nursing and Midwifery Officer

I originally came to the University of Derby in 2018 as an English and History student before realising that my true passion lies in Mental Health Nursing.  As I embark onto the next stage of my studies as a second-year student, I also aim to increase my involvement, engagement and impact at the University of Derby to represent all Nursing and Midwifery students and improve the student experience.

Over the past few years the nursing profession has been thrust into the limelight as a demanding, underpaid, underappreciated, and vital profession in the UK.  Nursing and midwifery students are entering the profession at a very difficult time, and it is important that we recognise the struggles that pre-registration nurses are facing in this unpredictable climate.

The University of Derby hosts 4 branches of nursing separated across 2 campuses and 2 yearly intakes in March and September, alongside the newly introduced Midwifery degree, equalling over 4000 students!  With all those students at different conjunctures the Nursing and Midwifery school can often feel fractured, disjointed and a little impersonal. I would like to see all these students coming together to work more effectively together to make the nursing degree an exciting and outstanding degree to study and graduating with first class honours.

Aims/Objectives

  • Build a team of students to reinstate the Nursing society.
  • Introduce a Nursing Student Food bank within the university.
  • Introduce student-led workshops and work closely with the PALS teams and academics (lecturers) to assist foundation and first year students with their studies.
  • Provide a voice for all nursing and midwifery students at the University of Derby.
  • Become a focal point for students to bring ideas, suggestions, feedback, and improvements.
  • Develop a unique and outstanding student experience for all nursing and midwifery students at the University of Derby.

I’m excited to begin the election and take on this new challenge to make the Nursing and Midwifery School at the University of Derby a more inclusive, supportive and collaborative student experience.
