The Union of Students at the University of Derby’s fundraising body, known as Raise and Give (RAG) are thrilled to announce their chosen charities for 2019/20.

Every year, a number of charities are selected by vote, and the RAG team sets about raising as much money as possible throughout the year. RAG provide help and support in almost any fundraising venture that students come up with; anything from a Fun Run, a longer-term project with their Club or Society or maybe even an outdoor adventure day in partnership with an organisation.

This year’s charities were voted in at the annual Community Awards, held in the Toyota Suite at Pride Park Stadium. The event is a celebration of all Union societies, student led services and volunteering and saw over 70 students choose between a number of local and national charities.

Our local charity for the year ahead is First Steps ED.

Marc Thrasivoulou, Grants and Contracts Manager from First Steps shared "Being nominated as one of the chosen charities by the Union of Students at the University of Derby means that we will be able to support more service users with our non-judgmental and emphatic support for children and their families, young people and adults in Derby and across the East Midlands who are suffering from eating disorders, disordered eating and body image issues.

We provide eating disorders support to University of Derby students at our Derby base on Agard Street, near the Law School (One Friar Gate Square) and were delighted to be able to strengthen our relationships with Students Services enabling us to work more directly as a referral partner delivering evidence-based care demonstrating to students the real possibility that recovery is achievable.

We will also work closely with our student placements from the University of Derby, who will help us in developing campaigns for fundraising in partnership with the Union of Students throughout the academic year."

Our national charity for the year is Rays of Sunshine.

Jess Burrows, Community Fundraising and Engagement Manager told us, “We are absolutely delighted to be working with Derby RAG. Our charity is 100% self-funded which means we are fully reliant on our supporters from businesses, Universities, schools, community groups and individuals to continue our much-needed work. The impact on your fundraising will make a massive difference brightening up the lives of children who are seriously ill across the UK.”

“In 2018, our work touched the lives of over 30,000 children and their families and since 2011 we have seen 100% increase in demand for our services. Your support will create precious moments of joy, relief and lasting memories, not only for children with serious and life-threatening illnesses, but also their families. Thank you so much for choosing Rays of Sunshine as one of your charities - we cannot wait and are very excited to work alongside students at Derby.”

RAG has raised over £17,000 this year for local and national charities – and creates a number of valuable opportunities for students to engage with the community, make new friends, have life changing experiences, and develop employability skills.

Vice President (Community) Charlie Bell adds, “I’m very excited about the chosen charities that have been selected for the next academic year. The Union and RAG has worked with both First Steps ED and Rays of Sunshine to some capacity in the past, so we know just how important they are, the impact they can have, and how our fundraising can make a difference.”

“Student fundraising is so valuable, as it’s one of the biggest ways students can give back to a community that takes them in. Often students move to a different part of the country for uni, so it’s wonderful that our students will be getting involved with not only national charities, but local ones to their university. I can’t wait to see what amazing things our students do for these wonderful charities next year.”
