2020 has been a year like no other, and with so many events cancelled, plans postponed and normal life turned upside down – many people have turned their focus to their own wellbeing, the safety of their friends and families and stayed at home for extended periods of time.
Since the coronavirus pandemic arrived in the UK, the third sector has been impacted significantly with services being postponed and fundraising efforts scaled back. It is with the upmost pride, then – that we announce our very own Netball club have managed to donate a whopping £3,975 to When You Wish Upon a Star! The club were intending to do a skydive in March, but due to the rapidly changing situation, it got pushed back. The members continued to fundraise – making the most of the extended timeline and this month, they finally managed to take the leap.
Ten members of the club travelled to Langar Skydive and completed the jump earlier this month.
Sophie Tate - Charity Officer of Netball from 2019/20, told us:
“Over the past few years Netball have built up a relationship with the charity, When you Wish Upon a Star. They have given us so many opportunities to fund raise which is why we wanted to do something big for them. They are an amazing charity who raise money to grant wishes for sick children and we couldn’t be happier that we were able to contribute to such an amazing cause. The sky dive was an incredible experience, even better that we were able to do it as a team. The feeling is euphoric, all fear goes out the window when you are falling. It was such an indescribable feeling, I recommend it to everyone and anyone especially if they are doing it for charity. I’m still in awe that we managed to raise £3,975!”
Vanessa Lee, Activities Co-ordinator (Student-Led Services) added,
“When the Netball committee first approached me with the intention of doing a Skydive for 'When You Wish Upon a Star' I was already impressed with their drive to support such a wonderful cause. When their original skydive, date was cancelled in March, they tirelessly continued to fundraise during lockdown, fully determined to hold the event as soon as they were able to do so. It's been such a challenging year for fundraising, and they didn't let that stop them. In a year where so many charities are struggling more than ever, it's a credit to netball that they persevered.”

Your Union's main fundraising body can be found in RAG, which stands for Raise and Give and pretty much does what it says on the tin! Every year the student committee work hard to raise as much money for charity as they possibly can.
RAG isn’t just about charities – it’s all things fundraising and they can always give you help and support in almost any fundraising venture that takes your fancy; this could be anything from a Fun Run, a project with your Club or Society or maybe even an adventurous expedition with an organisation such as Childreach or Choose a Challenge. Look out for this year’s RAG Week coming in mid-November, where we’ll have loads of opportunities to get involved!
