SAAFCO

SAAFCO and ABOUT TURN ARMED FORCES COMMUNITY DAYS.

For the last 18 months the SAAFCO society has been working to plan our Armed Forces Community Events; these will be held on the 30th June at Kedleston Road and on the 7th July at St Helena.  We have teamed up with the About Turn course at the university and the days are looking brilliant, even if we do say so ourselves!

The days will consist of celebrating the University’s recent signing of the armed forces covenant, but also to provide education, support and fun to all. We will be welcoming members of the local public and members of the armed forces and their families. The days will have a focus on healthcare and wellbeing as it was important for us to show people how they could get help,, even if they are unaware they may need it, and to break down barriers that may be perceived in the wider community.

On the days we be welcoming guest speakers in lecture theatre 0L2 from 10:00 hours- 16:00 hours;

Dr Paula Holt- the Universities Dean of Health and Social Care,

 Lindsay Khan of The Veterans and Transition and Liaison Service

 Andy Roper of Combat Stress

Stuart Wiles- Regional Manager of the ABF

David Corthorn of the Warrior Programme

Neil Garratt- Veterans Link Nurse of Department of Psychological Medicine

Darren Maltby/ Vivien Miller of the Royal British Legion

and

Dean Williams of Help for Heroes.

We will have stands in the atrium and at chesterfield uni;

Derbyshire Police, Derbyshire Fire Service, P3 housing, The Royal Navy, The RAF, Derbyshire Alcohol Recovery Service, mindfulness and many more!

We will have family activities from the Ministry of Defence and the RAF, we will have military vehicles, Derby County Community Trust, Bugs and Bones Exotic Pets and Jumping Clay!

The Universities About Turn Course will also be running in the T Block offering members of the Armed forces community an insight into healthcare courses!

We will also be collecting donations for the Royal British Legion.

And the best part? We already know we're doing it again next year, which will be even bigger and better!
