What are they and why should I get involved?

A Student-led service (SLS's) is just what it says on the tin! They are self-funded services ran entirely by students, with the support of the Union of Students.

The SLS's we have are RAG (Raise and Give), Phantom Media (Radio, TV, Newspaper), and Enactus.

How do I join an SLS?

To join one of our SLS's, you can sign up on SLS section of the Union website, similar to the way you would a sports club or society. If you wish to go for a committee position, you can apply for a vacant position by filling in an application form, which will be followed by an informal interview with Union Staff, Officers and SLS Committee members. This differs to sports clubs and societies to ensure that roles are filled by students with the appropriate level of knowledge to help develop the SLS. This is particularly important for the Phantom Media roles as they typically require a level of technical knowledge.

How does the Union support SLS's?

There is a full-time Activitivies Coordinator who works specifically with Student-Led Services, supporting with recruitment, equipment, admin, and any other support you may need!

But don't take it from us, we asked our current SLS committee members what support they feel they get from the Union:

As a student-led service committee member the Union supports me by...

  • Allowing me to use the skills I learn in lectures in a practical environment
  • Supporting me to try new things
  • Giving me new opportunities to test my skills and knowledge
  • The Union supports me in all things

As a student-led service committee member the Activities Coordinator (Student Led Services) Alex supports me by...

  • Providing us with the time, support, advice, and resources needed to help the service grow and succeed

Fancy it?
